Poverty is common in Uganda, absolute poverty levels;(those on less than $1 a day) are currently estimated at just a quarter of the population which is 22%, that means over 20 million people are un able to access basic necessities of life such as basic education, food, clean water, clothing, shelter among others. Many poor, and other orphaned children drop-out of schools due to poverty & lack of support in education and care. Some of them will no longer have the enthusiasm of going to school & therefore forced early marriage & engaged in child labor & participating in anti-social, criminal activities.
The problem of vulnerability amongst people in our community is acute due to wars and insurgencies that lasted in region (north eastern) for over 5 years and it resulted to loss of lives and properties that resulted to high poverty levels in families that have always been recognized as the major cause of disease, death, and disability. Recent floods, long droughts in our area and COVID-19 pandemic has aggravated the situation further. Furthermore, other levels of poverty in families is acute due to the Deaths of AIDS affected persons, Re-marriage of Widowed/ Divorce women, outbreak of diseases and viruses, Absence of love & security, Unwanted pregnancy of Sexually exploited girls; the orphan & poor children are left without care & support. These children starve without shelter, food , clothing, health care and basic education.
Improving community in access to better health, education, clean water, shelter, hygiene, food, livelihood, relief and aid, economic development and clean environment is seen as a necessary condition for development.
