Cause Summary

The project aims at increasing the global awareness of the need to reduce of plastic pollution and marine litter along the west coastline Cameroon.The project also aim at informing Relevant stakeholders and general public's awareness of the impact litter has on the environment, human health and marine wildlife.

Problem / Challenge

Each year, more than 1 million tonnes of plastic and other waste products end up in the Atlantic oceans. More than 50% of the litter that accumulates on shorelines, the sea surface and the sea floor is made up of plastic, the most common items being cigarette butts, bags, remains of fishing gear, and food and beverage containers. The consequences are severe: marine litter harms over 600 marine species (15% of which are endangered), it impacts on coastal economies, and can enter the human food chain through fish consumption. In recent times , the proliferation of microbeads and single-use plastics has made the problem even more serious

Solution / Impact

Solution1 - Training of key stakeholders and community members on marine litter and micro plastics - Cleaning of Beaches and Coastal areas and waters(Plastic collection) - Outreach Education in Schools and local communities on strategies to combat marine litter and micro plastics. Outcome: 5 Beaches will be Cleaned Up to reduce marine litter and micro plastic along the West Coast of Cameroon. Solution2 :To establish and reinforce the capacity of local councils and community members - The outcome is to forge strong networks and partnerships among stakeholders to combat plastic pollution. to enable the proper implementation of the UNEA4, resolutions - Develop Action plan and road Map to combat plastics pollution
