Cause Summary

The project idea is focusing on mitigating the long term impacts of Covid 19 by protecting out of school Adolescents Girls and Young Women (AGYW) from the consequences of early marriage, early conception, sexual and domestic violence. The project with focus on; Empowering GYW. Protecting AGYW from the adverse consequences of early motherhood and creation of young men on gender and masculinity. As a result of these interventions will be among others; Delayed age of marriage and first conception, reduction of maternal and reproductive morbidity among adolescent girls and young women. In the long run, it is anticipated that the following outcomes will be realized; Girls will increasingly be aware of their rights, Girls will have the opportunity to develop solidarity with one another through peer groups and collective actions to avoid early marriages,

Problem / Challenge

Every year approximately 5 million girls are married as children in Uganda: (Uganda is home to 5 million child brides. Of these, 1.3 million married before age 15 reported by UNICEF on child marriage 2019), cultures, religions and ethnicities. Child marriage is rooted in gender inequality and in the low value accorded to girls, and is exacerbated by poverty, insecurity and conflict. It denies girls their rights, choice and participation, and undermines numerous development priorities, hindering progress towards a more equal, healthy and prosperous world. This has again been exacerbated by COVID19 and in Luwero 12,404girls between 10 to 19 years got pregnant 2019 to 2021 September according to statistics from Luwero District. And teenage pregnancy is estimated at 17% as reported by UNFPA

Solution / Impact

Provide the out of school pregnant and young mothers with life skills and vocational skills to enable them create own income generating enterprises for survival. Along side the provision of the life and vocational skills, counselling and guidance will be extended to the young mothers help them mitigate the effects of COVID19 Pandemic The project is aiming to bring solution to the these girls by providing vocational training and support them to ensure that they stand out for their economic independence and productive persons to the community.
