Problem / Challenge

Every year approximately 5 million girl-children are married in Uganda: (Uganda is home to 5million child brides. Of these, 1.3 million married before age 15 reported by UNICEF on child marriage 2019). Child marriage is rooted in gender inequality and low value accorded to girls, exacerbated by poverty, insecurity and conflict. It denies girls their rights, choice and participation, and undermines numerous development priorities, hindering progress towards a more equal, healthy and prosperous world. According to Luwero District, during COVID19, 12,404 girls between 10 to 19 years were reported pregnant between 2019 to 2021 . According to UNFPA teenage pregnancy is estimated at 17% in Uganda between March 2020 and June 2021 (District Health Information System (DHIS-2).
